Story-wise and as long as suikoden II.Is there any PS1 or SNES games that are ...
Anyone? Is there any PS1 or SNES games that are ...
Thats really a hard one to answer. I dont know of any rpg that has 100+ characters to recruit let alone have a deep and rich storyline.
Star Ocean 2 and Chrono Cross are both really good PS1 RPGs if you havent played them yet.

you should try suikoden... but to the best of my experience in rpgs on those two consoles... and i've got lots... chrono cross will get you the character fix you're needing... i think it's somewhere around 40. star ocean is long and has like 80 endings depending on what you do.i'd also suggest saga frontier because it is incredibly long. you play through the whole story with like 8 different characters.you won't be finding anything that long or character rich on the snes, but there are still some wonderful games for it: soulblazer, secret of mana, ff2, ff3, earthbound, chrono trigger, mario rpg, etc.

Well most RPGs from older generation are going to be hard to find.If you have a PSP I would recomend gettin SO1(comes out this month) and SO2(Jan 2009).
Paladins Quest is highly looked over. It pre-dates Suikoden by a few years. The battle system is similar to Dragon Warrior, but you can recruit over 40+ characters in your adventure.
Breath of Fire games have a similar battle system to Suikoden games as well. Dragon Warrior 7 allows you to recruit town members and build a town in a Suikoden fashion.

the GBA Breath of Fire's are ports of the SNES games, but actually better since they give you a slight experience and money boost per battle, so it's not quite as a grindy experience.Dragon Warrior 7 isn't nearly as good as Dragon Quest 8, so I wouldn't bother with it
Radiata stories PS2 you can recruit like 100+ characters from what i remember. Battle system is fun also.
